There is so much to keep you entertained, you will return
again and again…
From the peaks and ridges to the valleys through which our untamed rivers flow, the Allegheny Mountain highlands of West Virginia remain one of the east’s paramount four-season vacation areas. Directly across the road from Brookside is one of the best kept secrets in West Virginia – Cathedral State Park, a National Landmark old growth forest of virgin hemlock, rhododendrons and mountain streams. Rural but not isolated, Aurora is located equal-distance between the recreation areas of Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County, MD and Canaan Valley in Tucker County, WV. About an hour’s drive will have you in Morgantown, Elkins or the Ohiopyle area of Pennsylvania.
| • |
Hike or mountain bike on wilderness trails at Blackwater Falls State Park, Dolly Sods and Monongahela National Forest or take a day-hike on nearby sections of the Allegheny Trail. |
| • |
Fish, swim or boat in nearby rivers and lakes. White water raft down the wild waters of the Cheat or Youghiogheny or float in the rivers’ shallows. |
| • |
Downhill or cross-country ski, snowboard or snowshoe at Blackwater, Timberline, Canaan Valley, Wisp, Backbone and White Grass. Or, bring your own gear and break a trail in Cathedral State Park. |
| • |
Play golf on one of the area courses including Alpine Lake, Canaan Valley, Deep Creek Lake, and Oakland. |
Or, if a quieter, more relaxing visit is of greater appeal...
| • |
Our ridge tops are breathtaking when fall colors reach their peak in late September or early October. Native rhododendron light up the forests from early to mid July. Cathedral State Park affords “gentle” hikes and has accessible trails. |
| • |
Antique shops abound and weekend parades and festivals, including the Buckwheat Festival, Forest Festival, Autumn Glory Festival and Independence Day celebrations, are numerous and close by. |
| • |
Enjoy the local cultural activities including live theater and music, fine crafts, and exhibitions. Visit historic towns or sites such as Arthurdale or Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. |
| • |
Research your family’s history at local historical societies, genealogy centers and libraries. |
| • |
Or, be alone with your daydreams on one of Brookside’s front porch rockers or in the hammock hidden in the lilac grove, on the trails surrounding the cabins or in the gazebo at the Red Horse Tavern. For those cooler days and evenings, bundle up with a good book in an easy chair or curl up in front of the wood stove or fireplace. Then, to shake out the kinks, you can take another stroll through Cathedral State Park. |
